Sunday Roast- August 14th

Yes, I am writing a short post about one meal. Before heading up to Sherborne for an afternoon of exploring we had Sunday Roast. Yes I capitalized BOTH of those words. It was an event and it was exactly as I dreamed. I’m fairly sure eating Sunday Roast is a requirement for U.K. citizens. Almost like a weekly pilgrimage. They won’t admit it, if you ask them they will be probably deny it WHILE eating Sunday roast in their local pub.

I remember it being a hot day, as were most while we were in Cerne Abbas. After Sunday service at St. Mary we wanted something that didn’t require heating food or cleaning dishes but did include Yorkshire pudding.

That sign board in the bottom right usually has Sunday roast advertised.

Of course we went to our favourite pub The Royal Oak, down the street from the Abbey. On Sundays it is only open from 12:00- 15:00. I assume these hours ensure that the staff are able to enjoy Sunday Roast.

We had asked in the previous days about Sunday Roast were informed that there are vegetarian and vegan options! I had assumed that I would be the only person enjoying Sunday Roast and the rest would order other things from the menu. I was thrilled that the whole family was able to partake.

The U.K. has been great about having options like this. If you look at the Royal Oaks standard menu (below) there are veg. options built in. They also have daily specials, but you’ll have to go into the pub to see those. Send me a message and let me know the specials of the day when you visit!

Both vegetarian and meat-etarian dishes included a puffy yorkshire pudding and potato wedges snuggled up in a gravy bath. I had the beef roast and the rest of the family really enjoyed the nut roast.

“It was SOOO good”

The vegetable medley arrived separately in two dishes for all of us to share. There were also cheesy leaks and red cabbage.

Heather surprised me by ordering us half pints of local cider that went really well with the roast. They have some really great regional ciders in Dorset that we’re going to miss. The ciders remind me of our homemade ciders.

If you have tips on Sunday Roast drop me a note or invite me to your house so I can try your version. I’ll bring cider!

  1. The Sunday roast sounds so good. My favourite is the Yorkshire pudding in gravy. Saw Mill restaurant in Sherwood Park used to have that Special years ago. Glad everyone is safe & healthy. Esther
